Education is undergoing a paradigm shift on a scale not seen since the Renaissance and the invention of the printing press. We are in the midst of seeing education transform from a book-based system to an internet-based system with profound implications for every aspect of teaching and learning.

A new technology doesn’t change something, it changes everything.” (Postman, 1995.)

The world is a different place to the one parents were educated for. Education, and with this classroom pedagogy, is undergoing change. We are moving away from an educational paradigm that has been in effect for well over 50 years,

Over the previous 40 years, we (New Zealand) had become quite expert at educational delivery. Because we are all a product of that 'apporoach', adults tend to be 'experts' regarding education, and many are cautious about accepting change to what had been developod into quite a successful format.

'Any curriculum that attempts to meet the needs of 21stC learners must address an inquiry model and focus on competencies rather than discrete skills'

The ministry of Education has realised the importance of instigating change, and have developed a sense of urgency for this change. Urgency in that several other countries including Australia have adopted curriculum reform and are leading the way. This has been reflected in the new Ministry draft curriculum which is availalbe for public viewing on their web site. The following overview outlines some key transistions between the paradigms.

The new classroom pedagogy requires a different classroom approach. In the late 1990's, Pasadena, along with a few other selected schools in Auckland in conjuction with Team Solutions [Ministry Advisory Group]. began adopting the New Basics philosphy from Queensland, Australia.  With the new educational paradigm come a different pedagogy (teaching approach). The new pedagogy has different requirements, including the need for a different means of assesment. Where as previously teachers often relied on outcomes, now process, developing understanding and thinking are key classroom components. Assessment here requires different tools, these include refective journals and learning logs.
